Have a sedentary job - Don’t sit on it - stand up

If you sit all day at work, you may want to pay attention to the first-ever United Kingdom guidelines designed to curb health risks of too much cumulative sitting time.

The guidelines, prepared by a panel of international experts, recommend at least two hours of light activity and standing during working hours for all office workers whose jobs are predominantly desk-based.
The experts claim that minor changes in lifestyle can help prevent a host of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), chiefly diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which are affecting younger people. "Regularly breaking up seated-based work with standing-based work is likely to be more achievable than targeted exercise," the guideline, published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, states.
It adds that employers should encourage staff to embrace other healthy behaviour, such as cutting down on drinking and smoking, eating a nutritious diet, and alleviating stress.
Dr Vijay Viswanathan of MV Hospital for Diabetes said the problem of NCD is turning into a health and economic crisis. "Due to current lifestyles, people in their 20s and 30s are suffering from diabetes and hypertension, which were generally observed in people aged over 50. These youngsters are usually off their beds and off to work, where they stay seated most of the time," he said.
"Offices must introduce workouts to their sedentary lifestyles. Besides, their work should, as much as possible, entail moving about for basic communications rather than messages and emails," he added.
Even a leisurely walk can help you burn more calories and may lead to weight loss and increased energy, the doctors said.
They added that being seated for long hours leads to obesity and it also effects the bowel movement.
The incidence of heart attack in the young has also gone up. "Earlier, heart attacks were only common among people aged between their 50's -60's. Today we have patients aged between 20-25 who suffers from cardiac arrest and coronary heart disease" said Suresh Rao, head of the department of cardiac critical care at Fortis Malar.
Experts say when we sit for long hours without a break our muscles burn less fat and blood flows more sluggishly .This leads to clogging of the heart by fatty acids.
"People with the most sedentary lifestyle are twice at risk to have cardio-vascular diseases than the physically active ones," said a senior doctor.
He added that lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, controlling obesity , reducing smoking and alcohol consumption can help delay onset of heart disease.
A review of data from the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study II (CPS-II) concluded that sitting for six or more hours daily can elevate the chances of cancer and other major diseases even if one maintains a healthy weight.

Nerendra Modi to accept Bangladesh award on Atal Bihari Vajpayee's behalf

Bangladesh is set to honour former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his outstanding support for the country's independence from Pakistan in 1971 when he was a Lok Sabha member.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman familiar with the process said Bangladesh will hand over Vajpayee's "Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to the country from June 6.

Vajpayee, who is unwell, could not visit Bangladesh to receive the honour.

"From the very beginning of the Liberation War (in 1971), he (Vajpayee) took a firm stand in favour of Bangladesh's independence... as the then president of Bharatya Jana Sangh and Lok Sabha member he mobilised campaign at home and in international arena for the rights of Bangladesh's people," the official said quoting the draft citation of the award.

Besides, the official said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also approved a proposal to honour the families of the members of Indian armed forces for sacrificing their lives for the cause of Bangladesh's independence.

The proposal suggested that it was a "national responsibility" on the part of Bangladesh to acknowledge formally the supreme sacrifices of Indian soldiers.

Officials said Dhaka decided to send the martyrs' family members a letter alongside a certificate to be signed by the Bangladesh premier expressing tributes for their contributions.

The then Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi was the first "foreign friend" to be conferred with the 'Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award'. Her daughter-in-law and Congress party president Sonia Gandhi received the honour on her behalf in 2012 at a special ceremony.

Most of the subsequent recipients were also from India which extended the most crucial support for Bangladesh's independence with incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee being one of them.

Bangladesh decided to honour the 1971 "foreign friends" soon after the ruling Awami League was elected to power in 2008.

Taiwan rocked by 'cold-blooded murder' of eight-year-old girl in primary school bathroom

Schools in the Taiwanese capital Taipei are to review their security measures after the brutal murder of an eight-year-old girl sent shockwaves across the state.

The island’s Central News Agency reported that the second-grade student, identified only by her surname Liu, has died in hospital of her wounds a day after she was attacked by an intruder at Wenhua Elementary School.

Police said an attacker broke into the school and found the girl on her own in a bathroom, where he cut her throat twice with a knife.

Liu was found unconscious on the floor and taken to hospital, CNA reported. She underwent surgery and briefly regained a heartbeat, but died on Saturday morning.

The attack made front pages across Taiwan on Saturday, and according to the South China Morning Post prompted a press conference from Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je.

Mr Ko said a task force was going to be set up to review school security, the SCMP reported, as well as establishing a system to monitor “potentially dangerous people”.

Police told CNA that a suspect, identified as 29-year-old Kung Chung-an, was apprehended a short time after the attack.

Kung received a bail hearing on Saturday morning, CNA reported, at which prosecutors requested he be detained until he can be brought to trial.
