Woman Maoist commander killed on Jharkhand-Bihar border

RANCHI: Security forces on Sunday morning killed a woman commander of CPI Maoist at Teteatand village in the tri-junction of Gaya, Chatra and Hazaribag districts on Jharkhand-Bihar border in a joint operation with Bihar police.

IG CRPF (Jharkhand sector) Rakesh Kumar Mishra said forces from 22 and 190 battalions with the local police from the two states had launched a combing operation on intelligence inputs during which an encounter took place with the extremists at around 8am.

Police have recovered body of the slain Maoist. "A sophisticated assault rifle was found near the dead body. Usually commander level Maoists carry such weapons," Mishra said. The identity of the woman Maoist is being verified.

Chatra SP S K Jha said forces from Chatra and Gaya districts had launched the operation. "I think she is one of the two woman Maoist leaders who have been behind several offensives against the police," Jha said.

A case would be lodged with Barachatti police station in Gaya district as the body has been recovered from its jurisdiction.

"Following the fatal encounter, the group of 25-odd Maoists are trying to run across the border into Jharkhand. Forces have been deployed along the border to stop them. Forces from both the states are chasing the Maoists," Jha said.

A police official said the Maoists had gathered in the tri-junction to hold a meeting ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar.
